Kolkata: Today is the 163rd birth anniversary of Bipin Chandra Pal, one of the nationalists who were at the forefront of India's independence struggle against British imperial rule. Pal had a multi-faceted personality – a noted writer, orator, social reformer and politician. He was part of the firebrand triumvirate - ‘Lal Bal Pal’, also comprising Lala Lajpat Rai and Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

He received education at the Church Mission Society College (now known as St Paul's Cathedral Mission College), a college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. He even taught at the same college. After the demise of his first wife, he solemnized marriage with a widow and became a member of the Brahmo Samaj.

He opposed the caste system and encouraged widow remarriage and female education. During the dark days of British rule in India, he as a leading Indian independence activist played a crucial role in infusing the spirit of nationalism among the people in the country.

He, along with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, advocated the Swadeshi movement by boycotting all foreign-made goods and emphasising the use of Indian-manufactured goods. Pal was awarded a six-month jail term refusing to provide evidence against Aurobindo Ghosh, a prominent freedom fighter and philosopher, in the Bande Mataram sedition case. Gosh referred to Pal as "one of the mightiest prophets of nationalism".
