The first New Zealand Tennis Championships were played at Farndon in Hawkes Bay in 1886. Maori participation in tennis began soon after, with many Maori playing at a high standard by the 1890’s.

The first New Zealand Tennis Championships were played at Farndon Park in Clive, Hawke's Bay, in December 1885. New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (NZLTA) was formed at a meeting held in Hastings in December 1886.

Club History | Clyde Tennis Club

The Clyde Tennis Club is one of the oldest tennis clubs in New Zealand, having been established in 1877. The Otago Witness newspaper in May 1880 commented that “ the fashionable amusement in Cromwell and Clyde at present is lawn tennis ”. The Cromwell Tennis Club was established in 1880 and the Alexandra Tennis Club in 1883.
