The Spain national handball team is governed by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation. Spain is one of the most successful handball teams in the world, having won two World Championships and being the reigning European Champions. They are also the only team, besides Sweden, to have successfully defended a European Championship title, having won in 2018 and 2020. As of January 2021, they are reigning double defending European Champions.

Spain are two-time world champions, claiming titles in 2005 and 2013, as well as bronze medals in 2011 and 2021. At the most recent World Championship played in Egypt in January 2021, Spain led their preliminary stage group with two wins and a draw and then put together a run of three wins in the main round to qualify for the quarterfinals. They defeated Norway in the last eight but were beaten 35-33 by Denmark in the semifinals.

The Spanish handball league is divided into divisions. The top teams play in the Liga ASOBAL. In each division, a team plays all other teams twice, once at home and once away. The Spanish league teams compete in Europe under the European Handball Federation, most notably in the EHF Champions League. The teams also compete in a domestic cup competition each year, called the Copa del Rey. The winners of the Liga ASOBAL play the winners of the Copa del Rey in the Supercopa ASOBAL.
