The history of football (soccer) Football (or soccer as the game is called in some parts of the world) has a long history. Football in its current form arose in England in the middle of the 19th century. But alternative versions of the game existed much earlier and are a part of the football history.
Soccer history starts with the first mentions of playing with the ball with feet were recorded in China and Ancient Rome BC. Inhabitants of the Celestial Empire played with a round ball on square areas, and Romans mostly used soccer not as entertainment, but as a training exercise for warriors.

However, the rules involved were very different from the game that we know and love today. As there is no accepted ‘official history’ of soccer, there is some debate as to which early sports influenced the birth of modern soccer. Another early version, for example, was harpastum that was played in the Roman Empire.

During this time, the Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese all appear to have partaken in games involving a ball and feet. Most of these games included the use of hands, feet, and even sticks to control a ball.
The word soccer (which arrived at its final form in 1895) was first recorded in 1889 in the earlier form of socca.  Within the English-speaking world , association football is now usually called "football" in the United Kingdom, whereas people usually call it "soccer" in countries where other codes of football are prevalent, such as Australia,  Canada, South Africa and the United States.
The history of soccer in the United States has numerous different roots. Recent research has shown that the modern game entered America in the 1850s through New Orleans when Scottish, Irish, German and Italian immigrants brought the game with them. It was in New Orleans that some of the first organized games that used modern English rules were held.
