The History of Volleyball Uniforms. December 11, 2012. The game of volleyball advanced a long way from its humble beginnings. Most people credit the creation of volleyball to a man named William Morgan in 1895. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say.
In the 1930s we saw the introduction of Adidas and Nike addressing Volleyball as a new sport for women. They started to develop special shoes for the sport and this initiated the transformation of the uniforms. This is though to have ignited the evolution of the Volleyball uniform.
The ball designed by Spalding and Bros had a circumference of 25-27 inches, and weighed 9-12 ounces. It consisted of a rubber inner, covered by a layer of cheesecloth, with a leather skin on the outside. In 2008 Mikasa released a new ball, the MVA200. This new ball has dimples and 8 aerodynamic panels.
Volleyball uniforms have really been questioned for what is considered a real uniform, but in the 60's you will start to see the older uniforms leave schools and the newer ones come in. For example sleeves of shirts will start to come off, skirts will totally disappear with the replacment of athletic shorts, and knee-pads will start to be worn.
The name Volleyball came about after a demonstration game of the sport, when a spectator commented that the game involved much "volleying" and game was renamed Volleyball. William Morgan was born in the state of New York and studied at Springfield College, Massachusetts.
